How to Unclog a Washer Drain

Is your washing machine drain clogged? While the culprit is likely lint and debris buildup, other possibilities include issues with your home’s drain, pipes or sewer line. We’ll show you how to unclog your washer drain safely.

STEP 1:

First things first. Be sure to turn off and unplug your washing machine.

STEP 2:

Look behind your washer and find the drain pipe, typically a plastic pipe connected to the back of the machine.

STEP 3:

Check for visible blockages in the drain pipe. Remove any lint or debris clogs with a pair of pliers. If that doesn’t do the trick, use a plumber’s snake or auger.

STEP 4:

Clear things out by mixing equal parts of hot water and vinegar and pouring the mixture through the drain pipe. Wait half an hour, then reconnect the drain pipe, plug in your machine and run a wash cycle.
STEP 5:
If you still have a clog, it might be time to call a plumber. There may be a more serious issue, and you’ll want a pro to help remove the clog.

Regularly clean the lint trap after each load of laundry to prevent it from accumulating in the drain pipe. Lint is a common cause of washer drain clogs.

STEP 2:

Place a mesh filter over your drain pipe to catch any lint or debris before it enters your home’s plumbing system.
STEP 3:
Keep laundry loads small and avoid washing large items like comforters that can produce lots of lint.
